Today, we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. We often think about his
commitment to non-violence, his willingness to fight for the rights of humanity, and the
powerful poetic rhetoric in his moving speeches.
The one word that comes to mind when thinking of this drum major for justice is the word sacrifice. Dr. King once said, “Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle.” To give up something for the sake of something else is what it means to sacrifice.
As we memorialize Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I ask myself, what am I willing to sacrifice?
What are you willing to sacrifice for the greater good?
Today, don’t just preserve the memory of Dr. King, but let’s hang on to a lesson from his life.
Let’s sacrifice our time to encourage someone else; maybe we can offer our resources to meet someone’s need; perhaps we can sacrifice a moment to pray for someone else; we could sacrifice a second to think fondly of someone instead of continuing the spread of a rumor. We can celebrate Dr. King today by serving and sacrificing for the greater good.
Let’s celebrate this way today.
